Game On!

Well, here I am updating the ol blog again about development. It hasn’t been 2 years since my last update so I suppose I am getting better about it.
In my last entry Platforms in my mind I alluded to me creating my own engine from scratch. Well guess what, you can scratch that as well.

I have decided to go back and use the engine I have used in the past for my games like Gravi Dot and Quarantine. FlatRedBall gives great flexibility for what I need and I already have the prototype up and running.
I guess I could have just developed my own engine and management systems, but I decided I would much rather just have to concentrate on adding fun, instead of managing all of my objects and stuff like that. Plus the added benefit of using Flatredball is my non-programming artists have tools to work with and we can get our work flow down much quicker and develop even more cool stuff!

So look for a platformer/shooter to launch on XBLIG in the coming months from us. I will update this site with more info as more becomes available. Like when we start getting art assets and the look and feel, we will probably update and start drumming up some excitement!

Platforms in my mind

Wow, long time no update on this deep dark corner of the interwebs. It is time for me to take an active stand on this whole development thing. Motivation has been grabbed and technology acquired. Wait… what did I just say?

Anyway, here is the official announcement of a new project(series of projects) for me and maybe some friends if they feel like helping me. I have been slowly and slowly(read: opened VS once and started a solution) developing a platform engine for a design I have in mind. However, I recently realized the scope of that project was much to large to build along with the engine at the same time. I would never get either one done.

So… I have decided on a separate game design idea I have been mulling over to build along with the engine. This will allow me to get things out in a more timely manner, and also allow me to get things straightened out for when I do build my ultimate game idea.

If you visit in the future, and I hope that you do, I will try to keep this little area of the web more up to date, and possibly even show progress of both the game and the engine. After all, I am always open to improvements and suggestions from my fellow devs and, if it helps someone out who might have a question, MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

Until next time, Mike Hoover

Cyber Lander: Mission Space

Cyber Lander was the second game that Cyber Edge Studios released. While I was not the lead and did not work on the project too much, I provided a lot of input and guidance for the project.

Quarantine

Quarantine-box-artMy very first game(official release anyway) was “Quarantine” and was released for Xbox Live Indie Games. Quarantine was fun to make and is still fun to play to this day. The reason I say it was fun to make, was there were a lot of problems I had to overcome while programming it. So many new techniques and problems popped up that I had not had to deal with before. So it definitely gave me some good experience.
